Le <strong>stockage de carbone des sols repose sur la dynamique de la mati\u00e8re organique (MO) des sols<\/strong>. L\u2019\u00e9quilibre entre la stabilisation des mati\u00e8res organiques et leur min\u00e9ralisation d\u00e9pend de processus li\u00e9s au climat, au type de sol et aux apports organiques. Ces derniers sont d\u00e9termin\u00e9s par les usages et pratiques agricoles. Localement,<strong> le cycle du carbone se d\u00e9cline tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9remment selon le contexte<\/strong>. Le stock de carbone des sols varie entre 5 \u00e0 350 tonnes par hectare. Quant aux stockages additionnels annuels, ils varient de 0 \u00e0 \u00e0 peine 2 tC\/ha. Diff\u00e9rentes m\u00e9thodes permettent d\u2019estimer un potentiel biophysique de stockage de carbone dans les sols. Pour autant,<strong> le potentiel de stockage de carbone ne d\u00e9pend pas uniquement de facteurs biophysiques<\/strong>. Ils correspondent \u00e0 une <strong>fragmentation par la faune du sol <\/strong>et \u00e0 une<strong> s\u00e9rie de r\u00e9actions chimiques<\/strong>. Ces derni\u00e8res sont catalys\u00e9es par les enzymes produites par les organismes vivants du sol, et en particulier par les microorganismes. Ce sont surtout des r\u00e9actions de <strong>d\u00e9gradation oxydative<\/strong>, mais aussi des <strong>r\u00e9actions de biosynth\u00e8se<\/strong>. Les mati\u00e8res organiques apport\u00e9s dans<strong> les sols se biod\u00e9gradent de fa\u00e7on plus ou moins rapide en fonction<\/strong> de la\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>pr\u00e9sence d<strong>\u2019organismes d\u00e9composeurs<\/strong>\u00a0: m\u00e9sofaune (collembole, acarien) mais surtout microorganismes (bact\u00e9ries et champignons),<\/li><li><strong>composition biochimique<\/strong> des mati\u00e8res organiques,<\/li><li><strong>disponibilit\u00e9 des nutriments dans les sols<\/strong>. <\/li><li><strong>condition de vie<\/strong> les microorganismes\u00a0: temp\u00e9rature, teneur en eau (optimum \u00e0 40 % de saturation), caract\u00e9ristiques des sols (texture, structure).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les biomasses restitu\u00e9es au sol<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Les <strong>biomasses restitu\u00e9es au sol ont des teneurs en azote diff\u00e9rentes<\/strong>. Cela se traduit par des rapports \u00ab carbone sur azote \u00bb, ou C\/N, contrast\u00e9s. Le rendement d\u2019assimilation des microorganismes est la part de C assimil\u00e9e par les microorganismes allou\u00e9e \u00e0 la fabrication de leur biomasse microbienne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si on consid\u00e8re ce rendement de 50 % avec un apport de 100 g d\u2019une biomasse avec un rapport C\/N de 10 (l\u00e9gumineuse). Alors, 50 g seront respir\u00e9s et 50 g serviront \u00e0 construire des cellules microbiennes. Pour cela, comme le C\/N microbien est de 10, pour utiliser 50 g de carbone, les microorganismes ont besoin de 5 g d\u2019azote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si la biomasse apport\u00e9e a un C\/N de 10, pour 100 g de carbone, alors elle contient 10 g d\u2019azote. Ces derniers sont suffisants pour le fonctionnement des microorganismes. On a alors une <strong>min\u00e9ralisation nette d\u2019azote<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par contre, en apportant une biomasse avec un C\/N de 50, il n\u2019y a que 2 g d\u2019azote pour 100 g de carbone. Les microorganismes devront aller chercher l\u2019azote manquant dans la solution du sol. On aura donc une <strong>immobilisation d\u2019azote<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La persistance des mati\u00e8res organiques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A plus long terme, on s\u2019aper\u00e7oit que <strong>la persistance des mati\u00e8res organiques ne d\u00e9pend pas de leur nature chimique<\/strong>. Il n\u2019y a pas vraiment de mati\u00e8res organiques r\u00e9calcitrantes, de mati\u00e8res organiques \u00ab immangeables \u00bb, \u00e0 part les charbons. Les <strong>processus qui expliqueraient <\/strong>l\u2019essentiel de <strong>la persistance des mati\u00e8res organiques \u00e0 long terme sont<\/strong> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>la <strong>protection physique<\/strong>,<\/li><li>les <strong>interactions organo-min\u00e9rales<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces mati\u00e8res organiques stabilis\u00e9es par protection physique ou par interaction organo-min\u00e9rales peuvent \u00eatre d\u00e9stabilis\u00e9es, si les protections sont lev\u00e9es. Ces lev\u00e9es peuvent avoir lieu lors d\u2019humectation, d\u2019alternances d\u2019humectation dessiccation, de perturbations de la structure du sol (op\u00e9rations de travail du sol) ou de bioturbation. Elles peuvent l\u2019\u00eatre aussi lors de l\u2019apport de mati\u00e8res organiques fra\u00eeches, ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne que l\u2019on appelle <strong>le priming effect<\/strong>. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est une sur-min\u00e9ralisation des mati\u00e8res organiques d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sentes dans le sol lorsqu\u2019on apporte des mati\u00e8res organiques fra\u00eeches dans le sol.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les facteurs de variabilit\u00e9 des stocks de carbone dans les sols<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Les<strong> stocks de carbone des sols sont variables selon les biomes<\/strong>. Ils sont <strong>faibles dans les biomes arides et plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s dans les biomes tropicaux humides<\/strong>. Cette variabilit\u00e9 ne s\u2019explique pas uniquement par le stock de carbone dans la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation. En effet, dans les biomes tropicaux humides, il y a beaucoup plus de carbone dans la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation que dans les sols (partie gauche du graphique). Alors que dans les r\u00e9gions froides temp\u00e9r\u00e9es humides, il y a plus de carbone dans les sols que dans la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation (partie droite du graphique).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/normandiemaine.cerfrance.fr\/arad2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/Facteurs-variablilite-stocks-carbone-sols.png?w=800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Facteurs de variabilit\u00e9 des stocks de carbone dans les sols\" class=\"wp-image-1758\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/normandiemaine.cerfrance.fr\/arad2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/Facteurs-variablilite-stocks-carbone-sols.png?resize=1024%2C696&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/normandiemaine.cerfrance.fr\/arad2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/Facteurs-variablilite-stocks-carbone-sols.png?resize=300%2C204&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/normandiemaine.cerfrance.fr\/arad2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/Facteurs-variablilite-stocks-carbone-sols.png?resize=768%2C522&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/normandiemaine.cerfrance.fr\/arad2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/Facteurs-variablilite-stocks-carbone-sols.png?w=1101&amp;ssl=1 1101w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Facteurs de variabilit\u00e9 des stocks de carbone dans les sols<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>En fait, cette variabilit\u00e9 s\u2019explique par trois facteurs principaux\u00a0: le climat, le type de sol et l\u2019usage des sols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Variabilit\u00e9 li\u00e9e au climat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le climat conditionne \u00e0 la fois la <strong>croissance de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation<\/strong> mais aussi les <strong>vitesses de d\u00e9composition<\/strong> dans les sols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Variabilit\u00e9 li\u00e9e au type de sol<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour le type de sol, diff\u00e9rents facteurs interviennent\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Texture\u00a0<\/strong>: plus les sols sont riches en argiles et en limons, plus ils sont riches en mati\u00e8re organique. Cela s\u2019explique par le r\u00f4le protecteur des argiles vis-\u00e0-vis de la d\u00e9composition des mati\u00e8res organiques.<\/li><li><strong>Min\u00e9ralogie<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Profondeur de sol<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Caract\u00e8re plus ou moins engorg\u00e9<\/strong> \u00e0 certaines p\u00e9riodes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Variabilit\u00e9 li\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;usage des sols<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, l\u2019usage des sols joue un r\u00f4le important. Il intervient \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re quelque soit le contexte climatique. Ainsi, il est possible d&rsquo;augmenter les restitutions organiques du sol. Cela peut \u00eatre fait en :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>implantant des <strong>couverts dans une rotation<\/strong>, <\/li><li>augmentant la <strong>dur\u00e9e des prairies temporaires<\/strong>, <\/li><li><strong>enherbant<\/strong> vignes et vergers, <\/li><li>en plantant des arbres, par la mise en place des <strong>syst\u00e8mes agroforestiers<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensuite, il faut veiller \u00e0 ne pas perdre le carbone de cette biomasse photosynth\u00e9tis\u00e9e en limitant les exportations excessives par une gestion raisonn\u00e9e des r\u00e9sidus de culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deuxi\u00e8me volet d&rsquo;action : les pratiques prairiales<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Un deuxi\u00e8me volet concerne les pratiques prairiales. En effet, la chargement animal, la densit\u00e9 du peuplement, la fr\u00e9quence des fauches affectent l\u2019allocation de carbone aux racines. Ils peuvent donc<strong> impacter l\u2019incorporation de la production de carbone par voie racinaire<\/strong>. Cette voie est bien plus efficace\u00a0soit 2,5 fois plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e que par la biomasse a\u00e9rienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En effet, le carbone vient des racines (exsudats). Les racines et les poils absorbants sont en contact \u00e9troit avec les min\u00e9raux du sol. Il y a donc <strong>adsorption, pi\u00e9geage, dans la microporosit\u00e9 du sol<\/strong>. Cette derni\u00e8re favorise le processus de stabilisation par interactions organo-min\u00e9rales et donc par protection physique. Il y a donc t<strong>out int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 promouvoir des syst\u00e8mes permettant d\u2019augmenter les entr\u00e9es par voie racinaire<\/strong>. Pour ce faire, il est n\u00e9cessaire de choissir des<strong> esp\u00e8ces (prairies, agroforesterie) ou des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s avec un fort d\u00e9veloppement racinaire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Troisi\u00e8me volet d&rsquo;action : l&rsquo;apport des mati\u00e8res organiques exog\u00e8nes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, le dernier volet consiste \u00e0 <strong>apporter des mati\u00e8res organiques exog\u00e8nes<\/strong> (effluents, compost\u2026). <strong>Augmenter les entr\u00e9es de carbone dans les sols reste le plus efficace pour stocker du carbone<\/strong> (graphique ci-dessous). Toutefois, il faut \u00e9galement limiter les pertes de carbone.
